Guild history

The history of the Zunft zur Schmiden begins with Brun's guild constitution in 1336, and the guild house still contains a wealth of evidence from six centuries of fascinating guild history.

Schmiden guild

The origin of the guild lies in the combination of various professional groups: Schmidt, Swertfeger (weapons), Kannengiesser (plates/plates), Gloggner
(cow/church bells), Spengeller, Sarwürcker (armored shirts), shearers and bathers.

The guild tradition is upheld in Zurich like in no other city. The annual highlight is the Sechseläuten. At the popular spring festival, the Zurich guilds parade to Sechseläutenplatz, where the Böögg is burned at 6 pm. In the evening, the guilds visit each other in their guild houses.
